Today saw just one lesson. My second, and final, observed lesson of this placement. I was slightly apprehensive about the visit for two reasons. One the class to be observed were my chatty Higher set and secondly as the assessor was Hamish Ross, who I had only met twice before...one of those times being at my interview for a place at Moray House. I spent the first two periods flapping around the base tidying my desk and neatly positioning my PDP files (all 4 of them). I then went over the lesson a few times in my head and photocopied the lesson plan for Hamish. I couldn't take my other Higher set today as I was meeting with Hamish and so spent third period in the staff base. Half way through this third period Ollie was required to chat to Hamish so I did manage to sit in on the Higher set briefly. I was quite touched by the fact that they had written a goodbye card for me, even if the inside did say, "Good Riddens...Hee Hee". I think that the process of transforming into a teacher has well and truly begun as my first thoughts were...'oh dear they have spelt riddance wrong'.
The crit lesson itself went well. The class were slightly quieter than usual and I too had toned down my chatty interactions. To my relief Hamish pointed out that having a more relaxed relationship with Higher students is often very beneficial and that I shouldn't be worried about this being seen in a negative light. I was also pleased that he had noticed the warm, inviting and confident bond that I have been able to build with the pupils in such a short period of time.
With the crit over I felt as though a massive weight had been lifted from my shoulders. I was able to relax by putting the rest of my first year homeworks on the walls and chatting with Ollie and Colin. Shadow study starts tomorrow....should be an eye-opener!
