Today's subject workshop at university involved more analysis of communication as well as I class activity...the trade game. As it is quite common for Human geography to be taught during the second placement some attention was paid to trade and aid and the various ways of providing unbiased resources for pupils. Personally I think our team won....but then so did every other team.
I also visited my old geology department to meet with Head of Earth Sciences, Sue Rigby. I had carried out some filming for Sue last summer to be used on the university website as a virtual fieldtrip for first year students. It will not replace the trip itself but aimed to teach the students what to look out for and what equipment they will need. Hopefully my presenting was not too "cheesy". Post-production has taken a long time. Doing much of the editing myself and adding the voice over in the university media studio. We have arranged a time for meeting to view the finished product. We also chatted about the nature of geology and how it is often misrepresented to pupils. There is definitely a need to link physical geography with geology. Many pupils think geology is "rocks" and that the subjects that they love in geography are not applicable. This is massively wrong. Environmental change, origins of life and many more subjects are all contained in geology. The work of SESEF ( http://www.scottishgeology.com/SESEF) is very important in this regard but it is also necessary for us a teachers to present the wonderful opportunities that geology and all earth sciences can hold.
