What a fantastic weekend. The weather was prefect. And I was running an Introduction to Sea Kayaking course for Glenmore Lodge. The course is designed for people who may never have kayaked before but want to get into the sport via the sea.
We started off in the swimming pool on the Saturday morning before heading down to Loch Morlich at about 11am to spend the rest of the day on the loch. We concentrated on the ‘nuts and bolts’ including forward paddling, edging, moving the kayak sideways and rescues. In the early evening we talked about trip planning and made arrangements for the second day.
On the Sunday we headed to Hopetown on the Moray Coast for a few hours on the sea. The swell was a reasonable size, which pushed some of the clients to the edge of their comfort zone. During the day we practiced and put into place all of the skills that we had learnt the previous day on the loch. The group were excellent, up for everything and a pleasure to work with.
I got a text message on the Saturday evening for Alice Dangerfield (Maths Teacher at DGS). Alice and a number of other teachers form DGS were away on Arran training for their Basic Expedition Leaders Award (BELA). Apparently Ed Offer had just found the large ‘A-Level’ text book (all 488 pages of it) that I had put in his bag when he wasn’t looking before he left school on the Friday. Sorry Ed! Guess I’ll have to watch my back for a couple of weeks!
