The afternoon session with Gill’s P7s was very eye opening, and highlighted some curriculum changes we need to implement in the DGS History Department. Our S1 introductory topic contains activities and topic areas, which P5 to P7 have already covered in Environmental Studies!! It could be that Primary teachers have cherry-picked the best topic areas, leaving us secondary teachers to cover old ground in S1 and S2. However, why should Primary teachers not do this if secondary teachers are not liaising with them to produce a more effective 5-14 curriculum?
I had a detailed chat with Gill and her team-teaching partner and obtained photocopies of pupils work at a range of levels. There is a high proportion of Level C and D in P7 class I saw and the work also reveals more literate pupils will be arriving at DGS in the next year’s cohorts.
I’d recommend as many teachers as possible take a day or a half-day at the local Primary(s). My PT is already trying to arrange time there.
