Spent yesterday at Dunbar Primary as part of East Lothian training sector Shadow. Thanks go to Nicola and Jill who let me help them yesterday, both seemed excellent teachers who were very committed to their classes.
It’s a huge Primary with 600+ pupils and growing. Also I was the only male there yesterday apart from the Janitor. Where are all the male Primary teachers?
Nicola has a P2 class who were 3 ft tall, chatty and wide-eyed. We began with reading groups and I listened to a top set and lower set to gauge their ability. Nicola hears all 4 groups every day, and they take books home to read in the evening as well (allowing parental/guardian input). We listened and recorded where they had read to and listed any problem words they came across.
Then it was time for milk and fruit and they gathered round me at the front to read them a story. I felt the reading went well, but I sometimes hammed it up and probably patronised them with sound effects!! After break Nicola set up the art activity with the kids by taking them through the task clearly and with good visual direction. We were making Christmas trees, so I ended the session with glitter and glue all over me.
I really enjoyed the morning and hats off to Nicola for doing an excellent job with 30 demanding and chatty 5 year olds!! I don’t mind admitting that I had a headache by lunchtime!!
