Now is the time of year for fond farewells. Many have already taken place and pupils already grace the shores of Australia and Spain and the mountains of Perú and France.
For a variety of reasons, exit styles vary. Some simply disappear. When you visit a school once a week, this just happens. Some bring presents and cards bearing expressions of gratitude which is always nice. Some gifts are the initiative of the pupil and some of the parents. In cases where you have taught several siblings, this can often mark the end of quite an extended relationship. Two or three siblings, each beginning in P5 a few years apart, can bring about a bond with a family lasting a dozen years or more.
Many pupils stress that they will continue playing. For others this is unnecessary - and this is the best present you could hope to receive - it being common knowledge that this person is now a musician, and that you have been part of the team which brought that about.
And now, it’s not so much an adios as an hasta la vista from me. I always advise my pupils to put their guitar in a cupboard and run about in the sunshine during the summer holidays, in the hope that they return refreshed and invigorated. That’s pretty much what I intend to do with this blog. To those who have tuned in regularly I wish you a happy, sunny holiday. To those who haven’t - may you roast in………………………..similar sunshine.

Roasting in the sun
