I was keen that all posts on the subject of testing should be together but, in truth, very little of this week has been taken up with that. In fact, the earnest tone which can result from striving to explain all the elements clearly is at odds with the whole feeling of the week.
I always enjoy the first week back. I like to find out how pupils enjoyed their summer; how they did in their exams; if they are able to pursue all the subjects they hoped to etc. We always discuss the option of external exams. For some S6 pupils who have not taken SQA music exams, I point out that squeezing in a Grade 6 exam in their final year could make all the difference to the overall impression of “breadth” in a CV. Moreover, UCAS points are available for Grades 6 - 8.
Another factor in the life of instructors is a massive colleague base – well over 300 in my particular orbit – and it’s fun to catch up with them.
Discussions are underway for the inaugural NBHS Music Camp at Loaningdale, Biggar this September. I have volunteered to drive a van containing instruments. This got us round to the subject of insurance. Does anyone know how this works? If I crash the van and destroy all the instruments – what happens then? Is there any service in the council which could better convey instruments there and back? I’d love to hear from anyone who has experience in this area.
P.S. I have never crashed a van full of instruments before. Such an event would surely make it as the “mystery noise” on Ask The Family.
