More limestone!

A busy day today with a few miles under my belt. Into Dunbar Grammar for the normal time of 07.45h met Paul Raffaelli on the way in as was able to congratulate him on his permanent appointment as head teacher of DunbarGrammar School. I then sorted out a few outstanding jobs before heading off to Musselburgh Grammar School to meet the guidance team I will be working with next session.

I was very grateful for the chat I had with Liz Buchanan and Robin Goldie about some of the procedures that are in place in Musselburgh. Musselburgh will be the third EastLothianSchool that I have worked in and each school does things slightly differently in terms of referrals, behaviour cards and information to students. Liz then gave me a quick tour of the school and I was able to meet a number of other people that I will be working with next year. I was particular keen and pleased to meet the PT’s of Maths, CDT and Home Economics as I will have some faculty responsibility for these departments next session. During my short visit I also managed to put a face to Chris Stevendale. Chris is participating in The League for the Exchange of Commonwealth Teachers to South Africa over the summer holidays and she is keeping a blog on the exc-el site while she is away.

At the end of my visit I sat in for the last 10 minutes of an SMT meeting before arranging with Sheila McIntosh (the Senior Depute) a time to meet over the holidays. SQA is on my remit and appeals will be high on my agenda before I officially start on the 7th August.

On the way back to Dunbar I popped into PrestonPans Education Centre to pick up a laptop that I am borrowing until my Mac gets fixed. I was starting to get a bit panicky about this as my presentation for the Colorado Conference next week is dependent on a Mac to make it run smoothly. Thanks for helping me out here Karen!

Back it school I taught another lesson on limestone to my Higher class and had a good lesson with my Advanced Higher class on their Geographical Studies. I think my Advanced Higher class were expecting to get spoon fed, however they are starting to work out that the more questions they ask, the more help they will get. Some of their project ideas, aims and objectives look pretty exiting.

This evening I finished the poster for next week’s conference. Its just under 2m wide and nearly 1m long. I really need to get it laminated or encapsulated before I fly on Sunday. Any ideas where I might be able to get this done?

Visit to MGS

Glad you enjoyed your visit here Ollie. It was nice to meet you too.

Big posters - try Edmonds in Leith?

If you end up having to pay, this Leith company could do it: http://www.edmonds.co.uk/large-format-print-posters.html
On their site a 60x40", 1016x1524mm poster costs £86 to £89 depending on paper, and they'll do other sizes. Maybe you could even negotiate an educational discount? Your enthusiastic endorsement on Exc-el must be worth something!

Teaching & Blogging

I'm about to change career & begin a GTP in Sept. I want to capture my experiences in a blog. Any advice on the do's & don'ts of blogging? (adamptaylor@msn.com)
