Solution Oriented Schools

Solution Oriented Schools (SOS) is a whole-school approach that helps to promote positive behaviour.

Solution Oriented Schools (SOS) stems from the principles of Hamlyn and his solution oriented approach. The solution oriented approach is very similar to the solution focused approach which, as it's name suggests, focuses on finding and creating solutions to a problem whilst spending hardly any time on the problem itself. The solution oriented approach differs slightly in that it 'hears the pain' of the person's narrative, listening for the core message and the exceptions. The focus is on establishing small steps that can be taken to resolve the problem, rather than the 'miracle' scenario which is commonly used with the solution focused approach.

SOS comprises training and resources to support the development of whole-school approaches to promoting positive behaviour. The approach invites staff to consider: "What works in school?". It encourages us to take a pragmatic approach; learning from what is working, leaving behind practice that is failing to pay off, recognising 'the problem' as the problem (not the child, teacher or professional) and building from the strengths that each individual brings.
