Google Earth

Google Earth http://earth.google.com/ was launched in August this year. How could this free downloadable resource be used creatively in the Geography classroom?

Glacial Features Standard Grade and Higher

I just had a really successful lesson with this. I zoomed in on Denali (Alaska, USA) and pointed out a number of glacial features including pyramidal peaks, arêtes and corries. Zones of accumulation and ablation are also very clear.

Arctic Natonal Wildlife Refuge Plug in for Google Earth

The Sierra Club has produced this great plug in for Google Earth which talks about he problems of drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. It’s a free download and an excellent resources. I can’t believe how many oil well there are up in the Arctic. The plug in also show the migration route for the Porcupine Herd and lots of other information that would fit in nicely with most S1, S” and Standard Grade courses. Particularly if you use the S1 and S2 textbook. I think this sort of thing is great and a example how Google Earth will continue to be used to expand geographical education and citizenship. Download the free plug in from http://www.sierraclub.org/arctic/maps/
