Its been a good couple of days in Stirling.
During the conference a number of new technologies were covered. This included Blogging, Podcasting, Digital Voting, Social Bookmarking and Photo Sharing.
The course was staffed by Ewan Macintosh, John Johnson, David Muir and myself. Overall I thought that the idea of the course was good but the content may need to be played around with if we were going to run a similar course again.
I ran the session on Digital Voting in the Thursday morning and spoke of some of my experiences of using voting systems in schools. We had problems with the technology and then problems with the development of quizzes during the delegate activities. I think that the Mark 2.0 Masterclass New Technologies in Teaching and Learning should probably include voting, but it should become a more holistic part of the course. One reason for this is that each different authority seems to be using different systems. I intend to write a guide on the use of Interactive Voting and outline the pro’s and con’s of individual systems.
By the end of the course everybody had had a chance to set up their own blogs and had had a go at recording their own podcast. The blogs that were created can be found at http://masterclass.edublogs.org/ .I’ve also had a chance now to look at some of the collaborative projects that were developed on the Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. I was particularly impressed with ‘ Podcasting a Beginners Guide using Garage Band’ and ‘ PC Pod: A Beginners Guide to Blogging and Podcasting’. The video that goes with the Podcasting Beginners Guide is also worth checking out.
The two days have certainly got me thinking. It strikes me that we have the expertise to run this sort of course in East Lothian and I think we should consider taking this idea forward along with a replication of the Classic Masterclass Programme.
Arrived back in Edinburgh at about 7pm and started to prepare for tomorrows Higher Student Conference in Dalkeith. I will be delivering two of the introductory presentations on Industry and Population and running a Development and Health workshop in the afternoon.
