Aims

We want to give a focus to Teaching and Learning within the authority. It is one of 4 key factors, which will improve the quality of education in East Lothian. We want to give a focus to Teaching and Learning within the authority. It is one of 4 key factors, which will improve the quality of education in East Lothian.

These factors are:

  1. The quality of Teaching and Learning
  2. The Aspirations of students and the Expectations of staff and parents/carers
  3. The Morale of staff and their attitude to the craft of teaching
  4. A rigorous approach towards school improvement, e.g monitoring and evaluation

Why focus on Teaching and Learning?

Until we can deliver the most effective experience for children then the development of the curriculum is of secondary importance.

Nationally there is an increased emphasis upon teaching and learning and how will/may the classroom experience of children in the future be different.

We want to make sure that resources, e.g. ICT are used to benefit teachers and students - the technology of the classroom should be driven by a practitioner (not a technologist's) focus.

We are seeking to change (for the better) all teachers' practice.

We want to create a critical mass in the authority within every school where there are no barriers to developing teachers' practice.

What outcomes do we seek?

We see outcomes as being presented in a sequential order:

  • An observable change in some people's practice
  • An ever increasing involvement of school's and authority teachers.
  • A measurable shift in teachers' positive perception towards the teaching and learning initiative, i.e. changing the critical mass.
  • Growing evidence to demonstrate effectiveness of change process, as measured by attainment, attendance, student evaluations, behaviour
